Bogus, Broken and Brain-dead Ducks |

During a severe storm in January 1992, containers
were swept off a container ship near the international date line. spilling
some 29,000 plastic bathtub toys into the raging North Pacific. Months
later, hundreds of the yellow ducks, green frogs, blue turtles and red
beavers appeared on the shores of southeastern Alaska. These reports have
allowed oceanographers, Curtis Ebbesmeyer and James Ingraham to trace the
wind and ocean currents. `
News reports asked anyone finding a yellow plastic duck with "The First Years" on its chest is invited to write or send the ducks to Ingraham and Ebbesmeyer in Seattle. The public responded --and genuine fakes followed shortly. Bogus, the duck on the far left, arrived with "First Years" scrawled across his chest in magic marker. |
